Asbestos gaskets are compressed fiber gaskets made from chrysotile asbestos fibers bonded with rubber or other elastomeric binders. They are known for excellent resistance to high temperatures, steam, oils and many chemicals, and have been widely used in industrial sealing for decades.
The gaskets exhibit good mechanical strength, low creep relaxation, and good compressibility, making them suitable for flanges, heat exchangers, boilers and piping systems operating at elevated temperatures. However, due to health risks associated with asbestos fiber, their use is regulated or banned in many countries.
